Backpack Program

In 2008, the Service League began the first Second Harvest Food Bank of Metrolina Backpack Program in Catawba County. The purpose of the program is to provide nutritious, ready-to-eat, child friendly, vitamin enriched food for children at risk of hunger to take home on the weekends and holidays when school lunches are not available.

Second Harvest Food Bank of Metrolina purchases the food for the program with funds provided by our Kitchens & More Tour, as well as generous donations received in part through the Service League’s Honor and Memorial cards. Second Harvest Food Bank of Metrolina packs and delivers them to our Hickory Food Bank where their local staff organizes them for distribution and makes substitutions for known food allergies. Service League members provide volunteers on a twice weekly basis throughout the school year to deliver the filled backpacks to Hickory Public Elementary Schools. Then volunteers pick up the empty backpacks from the schools, and return them to Second Harvest for refilling.

Recognizing there are an increasing number of Catawba County students not receiving daily nutrition, the Service League has given more financial support yearly allowing the Department of Social Services to distribute additional backpacks weekly.
